It is what it is.

Sometimes, despite your passion for problem solving, there are things that can't be fixed.

That's when you need to accept it as a condition of the environment, learn from it and say "it is what it is."

The trouble with this little aphorism is that people disagree strongly about "what is" and "what must be changed" -- that's what politics is all about.

For me personally, I'd change this to "It is what it is right now; I'll get back to it later."

I don't remember when I figured that out (well, mostly) but it's one of those A-HA! moments that stick with you (with the occasional reminder - thanks!).

Paul,

It does have a bit of sadness/ fatalism in it, though, doesn't it? When I first read it this morning in my inbox, my email was being a pain and I couldn't see the image. Reading only the words, I thought, what's the matter with Paul? (I hope nothing.)

You may be surprised to hear that in the U.S., this phrase has been banished. :)

With apologies, a slightly different take from my Irish background:

God grant me the Serenity to accept the things I cannot change
the Courage to change the things I can
and the Wisdom to know the difference.

Sending Serenity to you,

Kelly

This phrase is a great phrase to use when you need to cut off someone from complaining or gossiping. It's like a negative energy repellent. I know cuz my boyfriend uses it on me! It works pretty good.
