Great Happens, It's Tough to Always Be Good
In Steve Martin's memoir, Born Standing Up, Steve shares the challenge of trying to consistently provide a "good" performance.

I see a direct relationship between what Steve comments about and the same concept in business... specifically customer service.
The consistent work enhanced my act. I learned a lesson. It was easy to be great. Every entertainer has a night when everything is clicking. These nights are accidental and statistical. Like lucky cards in poker, you can count on them occurring over time. What was hard... was to be good. Consistently good. Night after night, no matter what the abominable circumstances.
How does your business consistently provide "good" service no matter what abominable circumstances?

Reactions
I just finished reading Martin's biography. What struck me was How Long it took him to get to the excellent level. Roughly, about 10 years before he was anywhere near his own definition of good. To me, this speaks to persistence of effort as a requirement for creative excellence.
